About
Join Dr. Marie Sumner Lott, Associate Professor of Music History at Georgia State University, for a special pre-concert lecture as part of Echoes of Beethoven, a series exploring the enduring influence of Ludwig van Beethoven on later generations of composers. This interactive talk will provide historical and musical context for the evening's program, illuminating how Beethoven's legacy resonates in Schubert's monumental "Great" Symphony.
A native Viennese composer, Franz Schubert witnessed Beethoven's meteoric rise to stardom during the 1820s at the same time that he himself was trying to establish a career as a composer of innovative works in the Romantic style. Although many 19th-century musicians and audiences knew Schubert primarily as a composer of light piano music and songs, his symphonies rival Beethoven's in scope and expressive intensity. This lecture illuminates the ways that Schubert adopted and adapted "Beethovenian" features in his final, monumental Symphony No. 9 in C major, composed in 1825-28, not long after the premiere of Beethoven's own final symphony.
This event is free.
