Featuring Dr. Marie Sumner Lott, this engaging talk will provide historical and musical context for the evening’s program, illuminating how Berlioz expanded on the model of Beethoven's "heroic" era symphonies, especially the "Pastoral" Symphony No. 6, in his groundbreaking work from 1830 Symphonie fantastique.
About
Opium, romantic obsession, the guillotine, and a demon orgy – today, this would be a Netflix series. Two hundred years ago, it was a symphony. Take a wild ride through the hyperreal Symphonie fantastique with the Swiss conductor Philippe Jordan. Berlioz's breathless Roman Carnival Overture kicks off the evening with thundering brass and percussion. The "strikingly brilliant," award-winning piano ace Bertrand Chamayou adds panache with Saint-Saëns’s Piano Concerto No. 5.
