About
This lecture by Brian Ginsburg will explore the profound artistic and personal influences that shaped Gustav Mahler's monumental Symphony No. 2, the "Resurrection" Symphony. The discussion will begin with key moments in Mahler's life leading up to the composition and premiere of the work, examining how his experiences, philosophies, and artistic ambitions found expression in the music. Particular attention will also be given to the defining characteristics of Mahler’s musical language and how they contribute to the emotional and dramatic scope of the symphony.
The lecture will then provide a high-level guided walkthrough of the symphony itself, highlighting its principal themes, musical ideas, and pivotal moments to listen for throughout the performance. As a deeply programmatic work, Mahler’s Second Symphony seeks to convey a powerful narrative journey, evoking vivid emotional, spiritual, and philosophical imagery through music. Mahler himself produced several sets of program notes to illuminate these ideas, and the lecture will explore how his intended narrative informs the listener's experience of the work.
This lecture will take place in the Event Room on the second floor of the Woodruff Arts Center (across from Atlanta Symphony Hall).
