About
Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) resides in the pantheon of the classical music canon as one of the most innovative composers of late Romantic-era symphonic repertoire. His prominent place in the pinnacle of Austro-German music-making begs the question: has this always been the case?
In the last pre-concert lecture of the season, multidisciplinary artist Anthony Mordechai Tzvi Russell will explore the tides of history that assailed the work and reputation of Mahler, from the genteel antisemitism of late 19th century European cultural circles to the rise of Nazi Germany, which sought to define his work—and that of many other composers of Jewish descent – as "degenerate" and marked for destruction. How does this history inform how we listen to Mahler, and how we regard his Germanness – and Jewishness – today?
