ASO & Chamber Chorus Perform All-Schubert Concert
The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra presents an all-Schubert concert as Music Director Nathalie Stutzmann leads the Orchestra and Chamber Chorus in his Second Mass and "Great" Ninth Symphony on January 15 and 16 in Symphony Hall.
Schubert's "Great" and final Ninth Symphony was written during a joyful and successful period of the composer’s career, yet was only first performed eleven years after his death. Adorned with trombone and harmonic excursion throughout, the exuberant Ninth Symphony showcases Schubert’s fondness for Beethoven with the composer’s own panache for effusive melodic writing.
Music Director Nathalie Stutzmann welcomes the ASO Chamber Chorus for Schubert’s devotional and contemplative Mass No. 2 in G major. Stutzmann, a decorated contralto of over 80 recordings, leads the Chamber Chorus in this modestly scored Mass written in only six days when Schubert was 18 years old.
While Beethoven decorated Vienna with grandiose public concerts and large-scale pieces, Franz Schubert was prolifically creating small-scale works guided by melody. Music Director Nathalie Stutzmann begins the concert from this vantage, with Ballet No. 2 from Rosamunde. Using woodwinds and horns, Schubert illustrates the story of a shepherdess turned princess in one of his most well-known and charming works.
