About
This season, the ASO presents not one but TWO concertos for the double bass. This weekend is particularly exciting as Talent Development Program alumnus Xavier Foley plays the world premiere of his own concerto with the Orchestra. Foley is already known for his expressive playing and is now developing a career as a composer and teacher. Winner of an Avery Fischer Career Grant in 2018, he is a young artist to watch, and we are excited to have him back in Symphony Hall.
The gifted young conductor Jonathon Heyward, winner of the 2020 Sir George Solti Career Assistant Award, conducts Shostakovich's Symphony No. 9, a piece commissioned by the Soviets to glorify Stalin and his victory over the Germans in WWII. Ever the subversive, Shostakovich opted for humor instead of heroism. Stalin didn't appreciate it at all, but our audiences will.
