Pianist Stephen Hough, "a virtuoso who begins where others leave off" (Washington Post), has been delighting ASO audiences for years. Not only is he a great performer, he's an acclaimed composer and writer, becoming the first classical artist to receive the MacArthur Fellowship in 2001. In 2014, he was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). Here, he brings his commanding presence and perfectionism to Saint-Saëns' Piano Concerto No. 4, one of the composer's most popular concertos.
Associate Conductor Jerry Hou leads the orchestra in the overture to Mozart's first great choral opera, Idomeneo, as well as Takemitsu's Requiem. Requiem is one of the best known works from the mostly self-taught Japanese composer. Our audiences will delight in this work, which Stravinsky hailed for its "passionate writing" and "sincerity throughout."
Closing out the weekend's concerts is the Symphony No. 5 by the (then) 19-year-old Franz Schubert, a brilliant work that makes one wonder what could have been, had he not died at the age of 32.
