The sparkling sounds of the season abound when your symphony performs your favorite holiday music! Hear The Nutcracker in an entirely fresh way—first with Tchaikovsky’s original version right next to Duke Ellington's big-band arrangements. This family-friendly holiday celebration features singer Tammy McCann, whose powerful, sultry, voice merges jazz with a Gospel esthetic to bring her unique sound to festive tunes. "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" with his friend "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" as we all go on a "Sleigh Ride" together! 

Holiday concerts are made possible through an endowment from the Livingston Foundation, in memory of Leslie Livingston Kellar.

Today, we join in recognizing the legacy of former First Lady Rosalynn Carter. In addition to her decades of public service and advocacy work on issues ranging from mental health to equal rights, we will remember her as a supporter of the arts in Georgia. Mrs. Carter was a regular guest at Atlanta Symphony Orchestra performances, once even joining in a fundraising “radiothon” to rally contributions to the Orchestra’s initiatives. We send deepest condolences to her family and loved ones. Two truths and a lie, Dvořák “New World” Symphony Edition! Can you pick out the lie here without cheating? 🧐 • Neil Armstrong reportedly took a recording of this symphony on a mix tape he made for the Apollo 11 mission to the moon in 1969, but we may never know for sure because the astronauts taped over it. 🚀 • Dvořák was fascinated by the silent films beginning to gain popularity in the United States in the 1890s and originally wrote the melody for the haunting English horn solo in the second movement to accompany the projection of a brief silent film (now lost) about American settlers migrating west. 🎞 • Dvořák worked on this symphony while living near Union Square in New York City, where he had a quintessentially New York experience in that he complained about his rent, which at $80 per month (about $2,735.90 in today’s dollars), he felt was too high. 💸 If we can add one more truth, it’s that very few tickets remain for Thursday & Saturday’s performances of this work (along with two other works by Dvořák: his “American” Suite and Violin Concerto). Brahms was a cherished composer to Robert Shaw, the longtime ASO Music Director and founder of the ASO Chorus. In the more than 50 years since the ASOC's inception, the group has showcased Brahms' choral music on record and in prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall and the Philharmonie Berlin. The tradition continues this week, as the Orchestra and Chorus unite in Atlanta Symphony Hall under the baton of Nathalie Stutzmann for three Brahms choral works: "Nänie," "Schicksalslied," and "Gesang der Parzen."
