About
Join us for a special free pre-concert lecture as part of Brahms Revealed, an in-depth, season-long exploration of a master melodist and orchestral architect.
By the 1880s, Brahms had become famous as a composer of serious and learned musical works. But, as the works on tonight's program show, he also enjoyed a good laugh with his friends and liked to imbue even his monumental works with joy. When the University of Breslau awarded him an honorary doctorate, he celebrated the event with a cheeky overture based on popular student drinking songs, artfully arranged in his Academic Festival Overture. At the same time, he was putting the finishing touches on his second piano concerto, a large-scale work for piano and orchestra that closes with a sparkling potpourri of Classical and Romantic themes, designed to capture the imaginations of pianists and audiences alike.
This FREE pre-concert lecture will take place in the Event Room across from Symphony Hall.
