The young conducting sensation Jonathon Heyward, newly appointed music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, returns to lead the ASO in a tasty rarity, the sassy Piano Concerto written by the 25-year-old Benjamin Britten. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra welcomes Korean virtuoso Yeol Eum Son, a pianist with “power and passion, fireworks and drama aplenty” (Limelight), in her first Atlanta performances. On the second half of the program, Heyward leads the ASO in the fragrant Symphony No. 2 by Sergei Rachmaninov.
Spring in Georgia: when the weather feels like all four seasons at once! ☔️☀️💨 🥶 So what better way to celebrate the arrival of Spring than with a replay of the ASO's recent performance of Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons"? We'll be hosting a free online watch party of all four concertos featuring ASO Concertmaster David Coucheron on March 20 at 8pm EDT over on our YouTube channel and at aso.org/replay. (And if you would really like to go for baroque this spring, you can also join us in Symphony Hall the next two weeks for works by Bach and his contemporaries! Details at aso.org/bach.) . . . #lovemyaso #violinistsofinstagram #violin #vivaldi #streamingconcert #baroquemusic

Tonight, we host a musical evening celebrating the mission of local and national Historically Black Colleges and Universities. We're pleased that musicians from @spelman_college will share their talents at a special VIP post-concert reception following this evening's ASO concert. Mara Suggs and Tyandria Ford Jaaber, both seniors majoring in music, will perform. And Dr. Maria Clark, from Spelman's vocal department, will sing a piece composed by two Spelman professors. We'll also enjoy a spoken word performance from student Nadya Lopez (not pictured). Trey Clegg (Founder and Director for the Trey Clegg Singers) will be the accompanist for the evening. This week, it’s Conrad Tao x Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, teaming up for two performances of Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G. We were hanging out in the ASO’s practice rooms (hence the background sounds!) and the ASO staff really wanted to know more about Conrad’s theory that Ravel might have had some feline inspiration for the last movement of the concerto. Here’s the explanation. What do you think? 🐈 If you’re in Atlanta, join us tonight or tomorrow night to hear it in person. Details at aso.org
🚨Pre-Concert Chamber Music Alert🚨 The Merian Ensemble (@themerianensemble) will take the stage in Symphony Hall at 6:45pm on February 23. This group of performers from the ASO supports and spotlights works by women composers, and they have prepared a wonderful program featuring Rebecca Clarke, Florence Price, Lawren Brianna Ware and Yuko Uébayashi. If you have tickets to one of this week's ASO performances, you have tickets to this chamber performance as well! Details at link in bio.
Program update: Conductor Ryan Bancroft has withdrawn from this week’s concerts due to illness. We are grateful to Roderick Cox (@roderickcoxconductor), who will conduct these performances. Cox will lead an updated program, which will now include Tchaikovsky's "Romeo and Juliet" Overture-Fantasy alongside Ravel's Piano Concerto in G—with soloist Conrad Tao—and William Levi Dawson's "Negro Folk Symphony." Cox is a winner of the Sir Georg Solti Conducting Award, and recent highlights include debuts with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Die Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, Malmo Symphony, Lahti Symphony, Boston Symphony, Cincinnati Symphony, New World Symphony, and Orchestre de Paris. But we're excited to welcome him home to Georgia—he was born in Macon and attended Columbus State University! Tickets and info at link in bio.
POV: You’re strolling through an art gallery when you come across a striking painting of dimly lit catacombs. 🖼 This week in Symphony Hall, Han-Na Chang (@hannachangmusic) leads the Orchestra in a performance of Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition” (orchestrated by Ravel). Here they are rehearsing just one of the paintings in this musical gallery. We hope you’ll join us Thursday or Saturday for the whole journey!
