ASO Musician Information Page

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra unites, educates, and enriches our community through the engaging and transformative power of orchestral music experiences. As we perform, we engage the diverse international community of our city, bringing people together in harmony—including our youngest citizens, with extensive opportunities for youth and families to fall in love with music.

Music for the Very Young - Meet the Musician

35.png

Meet the Musician is a 30-minute performance for children ages 0-5 and their grownups. The performance occurs between our Music for the Very Young classes on Tuesday and Friday mornings from 11:00 AM - 11:30 AM. Families are encouraged to join following or before class. Musicians are encouraged to perform a selection of classical pieces/excerpts or classic children's songs along with a short description of their instrument. The purpose of this program is to showcase a variety of instruments for young children and adults. All instruments are welcome and encouraged to participate!

Note: MVY families commit to attending all 10 weeks of the class on either Tuesdays or Fridays. Therefore, we ask you to consider signing up for one full week and allow for other instruments to be showcased before signing up again.

This performance offers 1 credit.

Students at the Symphony: Chamber Performance + Tour:

34.png

The Chamber Performance + Tour offers students (Grades 3-12) the opportunity to listen to a private chamber ensemble performance by a group of ASO musicians from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM. Mixed in with the performance, musicians are encouraged to speak about their playing techniques and the process of studying a new piece and answer any questions the students might have. This is an excellent opportunity to have an open dialogue about what it is like to be a professional musician in a relaxed, casual setting.

After the chamber performance, students will take a Behind the Scenes tour of Symphony Hall. They can walk on stage, see production, and speak with department staff. This program aims to highlight how students can pursue a career in music.

This performance offers 1 credit per musician.

In-school Clinics

Untitled design (25).png

A block of time (up to 2 hours) where we have a group of musicians visit a school to work with their students directly. A majority of these will be for schools that are preparing to perform at a notable event, such as the Georgia Music Educator Association Conference, the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, or the American String Teachers Association conference. The goal is to support the school in organizing their event without cost and give the students a chance to work with professional musicians. The format of these is worked out with the teacher on a case-by-case basis but typically includes full ensemble instruction followed by sectionals.

Additionally, musicians have discussed topics such as audition prep, what it's like to work for a symphony, instrumental technique, and masterclasses.

Schools we have served:

  • Hightower Trail Middle School
  • West Minister Middle School
  • Johns Creek High School
  • Simpson Middle School

This engagement offers 1 credit per musician.

Community Engagement Opportunities

Woodruff Arts Center Family Days

During the year, we partner with the High Museum and the Alliance Theatre to provide campus-wide activities for families. We contribute some of our programming to offer variety to the other art offerings, such as Meet the Musician and Chamber Ensemble performances.

See the WAC Family Days below (also listed on Sign-Up Genius):

  • Grandparent's Day (September 8)
  • Sensory Friendly Sunday (November)
  • Lifelong Learning (January)
  • Toddler Takeover (April 5-6)

Note: Each event will often host 2 - 4 performances per day. 1 credit will be offered per performance.

STEAM Days

Many schools around the metro Atlanta area offer a STEAM Day for their students and local organizations. Last year, the ASO was able to attend four STEAM Days, and we are hoping to do more this year!

On STEAM Days, musicians are asked to create a short (30-minute or less) program that connects music with Science, Math, Technology, or Engineering. This may be a lesson on frequency and vibrato or a lesson on time signatures and arithmetic.

Schools we have partnered with for the 23-24 year are:

  • Scoggins Middle School STEAM Night | FEB 8 from 5:30 PM-8 PM
  • Midtown High School STEAM Carnival | MAR 28 (Time TBD)

Note: Check Sign-Up Genius, as we anticipate invitations from more schools later in the year.

Senior Living Communities

The ASO is dedicated to providing a classical music experience to enhance the lives of seniors in senior living communities across metro Atlanta. The power of music can bring joy, purpose, connectivity, and healing to all people. Some senior facilities we have partnered with are:

  • Calvin Court
  • Canterbury Court
  • Decatur Christian Towers
  • Knightsbridge
  • Lenbrook and more!
