Julia Su
Biography
Violinist Julia Su joined the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in September 2025. An Atlanta native, she began her violin studies at the age of four with her mother, Sheela Iyengar Su. Ms. Su earned both her Bachelor's and Master's of Music degrees from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, under the tutelage of Kathleen Winkler.
Prior to her appointment with the ASO, Ms. Su appeared as a soloist with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, performing Winter from Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons” in their 2017 Family Holiday Concerts. She has also made solo appearances with both the DeKalb Symphony Orchestra and Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra, performing the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto. Ms. Su served as concertmaster of the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra from 2017-2019, and was also the recipient of the 2020 Mark Zinger Memorial Foundation Scholarship and 2021 Oscar Valentin Violin Award.
Ms. Su performed in Carnegie Hall and embarked on a concert tour of Asia under the baton of Michael Tilson Thomas, as a member of the National Youth Orchestra of the USA for the 2018 season. She has also had the privilege of working with distinguished conductors such as Cristian Măcelaru, Miguel Harth-Bedoya, Giancarlo Guerrero, Juraj Valčuha, and Hans Graf, among others.
Ms. Su has performed concerts as a guest violinist with various orchestras, including the Houston Symphony and the New World Symphony. While at Rice, Ms. Su held title positions in the Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra, including Principal Second Violin and Associate Concertmaster. She has also spent summers at Sarasota Music Festival, Heifetz International Music Institute, and Madeline Island Chamber Music as a member of the String Quartet Fellowship Program.
Ms. Su plays on a 1910 Annibale Fagnola Violin. Outside of music, she enjoys fitness, fashion, and spending quality time with her friends and family.
