Jere Flint

Biography

Jere Flint was Music Director of the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra, directing the weekly rehearsals and conducting three ASYO concerts each year.  In addition, he was a member of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s cello section.

Mr. Flint conducted the ASYO since 1979 and led the ASO’s popular Family and Symphony Street concerts for youngsters.  He was the ASO’s Staff Conductor and regularly led ASO performances for the Classic Chastain pop series at Chastain Park.

Mr. Flint always believed the conductor’s job is not only to teach but to learn, and that has allowed him to cultivate exceptional musicianship from, specifically, the Youth Orchestra.

"I always tried to treat young musicians the way I would want to be treated, and I never talked down to them and never belittled them.  I respected them for what they can do, and I respected them as people."

Born on Long Island, NY, Mr. Flint obtained a bachelor’s degree in music from Wittenberg University in Ohio.  He received his master’s degree in music in 1967 from the University of Washington in Seattle, while serving as manager of the University Festival Opera Company and music director for the School of Drama.  He later studied conducting under Otto-Werner Mueller.

Mr. Flint has led performances at Brevard Music Center, Sewanee Summer Music Center, Atlanta-Emory Orchestra, and the Southeastern Music Center.
