Biography

James Stephenson is a highly sought-after and prolific American composer, arranger, and conductor whose music has been praised as astonishingly inventive. Known for creating works that resonate deeply with both performers and audiences, his compositions are characterized by a keen sense of rhythmic momentum, colorful orchestration, and a seamless blend of historical traditions with contemporary sensibilities. Since shifting to composition full-time in 2007, his extensive catalog has grown to exceed 300 works, positioning him as a major voice in modern classical, wind ensemble, and commercial music landscapes.

Born in Joliet, Illinois, Stephenson’s path to composition was unique and largely self-taught. He attended the Interlochen Arts Academy and later graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music with a degree in trumpet performance. Following his studies, he spent 17 seasons as a professional trumpeter with the Naples Philharmonic in Florida. It was during his tenure in the orchestra that he began arranging pieces for the ensemble’s brass quintet. His innate talent caught the attention of the orchestra's pops conductor, Erich Kunzel, who encouraged him to write for full orchestra, sparking a passion that would eventually reshape his entire musical career.

Stephenson’s extraordinary gift for highlighting the unique capabilities of orchestral instruments has earned him the nickname "The Concerto King" from musicians across the country. He has composed concertos and sonatas for nearly every symphonic instrument, frequently commissioned by principal players from the nation's leading orchestras, including those in Chicago, Boston, New York, and Philadelphia. His major works have been premiered by top-tier ensembles such as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Pops, the Minnesota Orchestra, and the St. Louis Symphony, as well as renowned soloists like saxophonist Branford Marsalis. Notably, his piece Fanfare for Democracy was premiered by "The President's Own" United States Marine Band at the 2021 Presidential Inauguration.

Equally celebrated as an arranger and conductor, Stephenson's orchestral arrangements are a staple of the American pops repertoire. His charts have been performed, recorded, and broadcast by virtually every major pops orchestra in the United States, including the Cincinnati Pops and the New York Pops. On the podium, he frequently leads regional orchestras and concert bands, and he previously spent a decade serving as the Composer-in-Residence for the Lake Forest Symphony near his home in the Greater Chicago area.

Today, Stephenson continues to expand his creative boundaries from his base in Illinois, branching out into large-scale dramatic works. His diverse output includes acclaimed ballets for companies like the Joffrey Ballet and San Francisco Ballet, multiple symphonies, and his first comic opera, Caraboo, which premiered in 2023. With his music featured on more than 30 commercial CDs, Stephenson continues to enrich the global repertoire with a distinct, performer-friendly voice that brings energy and imagination to the concert stage.
