Dr. J. Peter Burkholder

Biography

J. Peter Burkholder is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Musicology at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and author of the four most recent editions of A History of Western Music and Norton Anthology of Western Music. He has served as President of the American Musicological Society and of the Charles Ives Society, and his scholarship on Charles Ives, modern music, musical borrowing, and music history pedagogy has won numerous awards and has been translated into six languages. He was given a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Society for American Music in 2024. His most recent book is Listening to Charles Ives: Variations on His America (2021).
