Biography

Delvyn Case is an acclaimed American composer, conductor, scholar, and educator whose diverse body of work bridges the worlds of contemporary classical music, public theology, and community engagement. Based in the Boston area, Dr. Case has earned widespread recognition for his ability to craft music that is both intellectually rich and vibrantly accessible to audiences of all backgrounds. Among his most celebrated and frequently performed orchestral works is his dazzling holiday overture, "Rocket Sleigh" (frequently programmatic but sometimes listed with minor variations). Inspired by classic winter pieces like Leroy Anderson’s Sleigh Ride, this energetic, rhythmically complex overture reimagines Santa’s journey with a 21st-century twist, trading traditional reindeer for rocket power in a thrilling display of orchestral color and festive joy.

Dr. Case’s formal musical journey began with rigorous training at some of the world's most prestigious institutions. He completed his undergraduate studies summa cum laude at Yale University, where he directed the famous Yale Bach Society and became one of the few undergraduates permitted to study composition at the graduate level. He went on to receive a William Penn Fellowship for his graduate work at the University of Pennsylvania, earning his Ph.D. in musical composition at the young age of 26. Throughout his formative academic years, he studied under a distinguished roster of contemporary master composers, including Steven Mackey, Sebastian Currier, and David Lang.

Beyond his work as a creator, Dr. Case is a deeply dedicated educator and musical leader. He currently serves as an Associate Professor of Music at Wheaton College in Massachusetts, where he teaches courses in composition, songwriting, music theory, and popular music history. He also serves as the Music Director of the Great Woods Symphony Orchestra, an intergenerational ensemble dedicated to fostering collaboration, mutual respect, and high-level music-making within the community. His academic influence extends globally, having served as a Visiting Fellow at Exeter College, Oxford, and a fellow at the Woolf Institute in Cambridge.

An innovative force in sacred and concert music, Case is also the founder of Deus Ex Musica, an international ecumenical organization that promotes the use of sacred music as a dynamic resource for faith formation, interfaith dialogue, and community cross-pollination. His music has been performed by over 100 orchestras worldwide—including the National Symphony Orchestra, Boston Pops, Toronto Symphony, and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic—and has been championed by top-tier soloists and ensembles such as the Grammy-winning Chestnut Brass Company and the New York Virtuoso Singers. Whether writing intricate chamber music, large-scale sacred cantatas, or exhilarating holiday overtures, Dr. Case continues to enrich the contemporary classical repertoire with music that pulses with energy, intellect, and profound humanity.
