Biography

A native of Norfolk, Virginia, David Eccles is a visionary educator and cellist dedicated to shaping the next generation of musical excellence. Currently, the Orchestra Program and Upper School Orchestra Director at The Lovett School in Atlanta, David’s transformative approach to teaching earned him the prestigious O. Wayne Rollins Master Teacher Award in 2022. 

With a career spanning over three decades as an educator, conductor, and cellist, David has become a leader of the national string community. Whether he is leading youth orchestras as a principal conductor or guest-conducting elite regional ensembles, his baton brings a unique blend of precision and passion to the podium. A prolific voice in the field, David is a clinician and contributing author for the Hal Leonard Corporation and a featured educator in the book Rehearsing the High School Orchestra

David’s academic activities include advanced degrees from Florida State University and the University of Miami, building on a foundation from Norfolk State University. He is a dedicated advocate for the arts through his membership in the Georgia Music Educators Association. He is the President-Elect of the American String Teachers Association and serves on the board of the Foundation for the Advancement of String Education.
