This choral performance, the first of four events in Meridian Herald's CONFLUENCE series exploring the environment, arts, and activism, offers poems by Georgia poet Sidney Lanier in musical settings by Georgia composer Steven Darsey. Featured will be the premiere of Darsey's orchestral-choral setting of Lanier's transcendent poem "The Marshes of Glynn." Darsey has spent decades studying Lanier's life and works and exploring the places Lanier invokes in his poetry. Georgia actress Brenda Bynum said of Darsey's "Marshes" setting: "This is a major work of American musical art, and it has grown right out of our native literary tradition and the unspeakable beauty of our Georgia coast."
